I've been reading a book titled:
Serving with eyes
wide open by David A. Livermore. I am involved in this book, I can't put it down because it's got my attention.
"Did you know that America is made up of only 5% of the worlds population, yet we consume more than 50% of it's resources. or that the largest Christian communities today are not in the U.S. but in Africa and Latin America. The 'typical" Christian in the world is a woman living in a village in Nigeria or in a Brazilllian
flavella. The vast majority of christians are young, nonwhite, poor, theologically conservative, and female."
Only 8% of the worlds population ownes a car. The combined income of the 447 wealthiest people in the world is more money than the combined income of 50% of the worlds population.
Livermore's book talks about perspective. Having perspective on the realities of the world. I got to thinking to myself how am I impacting the world? What am I doing to leave a legacy of impact.
There is conferance after conferance of how to do church effective and how to reach out. But the truth of the matter is we're doing a poor job of reaching out. The church today has gotten into programs and seminars that we're all trying to achieve the next big thing. I believe we're on the wrong track. Did you know the church (The big C) total budget gives less than 5% to missions. It's no wonder we're "playing" church and "paying" the price. I think it's time for the Church to take missions to the next level. It's time to impact the outside more than the inside. I know of too many christians that know what's going on down the street but has no clue of what is going on accross the sea.
"The pace at which the majority church i(outside of America)is growing is phenomenal. Consider a few of the statistics:
- On average, 178,000 people are converted to Christianity daily.
- Daily, 35,000 conversions occur in Latin America. There were 50,000 believers reported in Latin America in 1900. By 1980 there were more than 20 million and the number is now over 489 million.
- Daily, 28,000 conversions occur in China. When China became closed to missionaries in 1950, there were reportedly a million Christians in China. Today's estimates are nearing 100 million.
- In Indosenia, the largest Islamic country in the World, at least a million people convert to Christianity each year.
- India has more than 85 million believers. 200 teams travel the nation with an Indian version of the Jesus film, entitled
The Man of Peace, and report 100,000 conversions monthly! - In 1900, Korea was deemed impossible to penetrate with the gospel. Today, South Korea is reported to be more than 40% Christian, with more thatn 7,000 Christian churches in Seoul alone.
- More people have come to know the Lord in Iran in the past 10 years than in the previous thousand years combined! Thriving churches are found in almost every Iranian city and village.
- Daily, 20,000 conversions occur in Africa. 40% of Africa is said to be "Christian" now.
- None of the 50 largest churches in the world are found in North America. Check out the size of a few of these congregations. In Seoul, Korea, there are 253,000 members in Yoido Full Gospel Church. In Abidjan, Ivory Coast, there are 150,000 members in one congregation. Another 150,000 members attend Yotabeche Methodist Church in Santiago, Chile, and 120,000 members attend Deepr Life Bible Church in Lagos, Nigeria.
Wow.
